A BBC broadcaster confessed to killing his lover on a documentary for BBC One’s Inside Out East Midland’s program on euthanasia, which aired February 15. The confession had been taped in December, but the BBC never informed the authorities.
Police are now investigating Ray Gosling, the TV presenter who made the confession, and his claim of killing his lover who was dying of AIDS.
In the program, Gosling said: "I said to the doctor: 'Leave me… just for a bit,' and he went away… I picked up the pillow and smothered him until he was dead. The doctor came back and I said: 'He's gone.' Nothing more was ever said.”
“When you love someone, it is difficult to see them suffer."
The BBC says they were under no legal obligation to report the confession, but will cooperate with the inquiry.
Gosling didn’t name his lover or which hospital this took place in, but says he made a pact with the man to end his life if the pain became too much. "If he was looking down on me now he would be proud,” he says. “No regrets.”
Gosling also says that he accepts the consequences that will arise from his confession, but won’t cooperate with authorities.
Hard to say just what the police can do in this situation, since he doesn’t name who the person was or when this took place. I don’t consider euthanasia to be criminal, but the manner in which Gosling admits committing it smacks of negligence. We only have his word that this is what his lover wants and nothing more, making it impossible to know the truth.
i'm not against euthanasia per se', but i ain't down with what this guy did. the point of euthanasia is to minimize suffering... a pillow smothering doesn't sound particularly pleasant to me.
