The Dashing Fellows

Books! (Vargas Llosa punches Garcia Marquez)

- DC Comics reprinting Alan Moore's key 80s Superman stories in a nice hardcover. Here's a heartfelt piece on "Whatever Happened to the Man of Tomorrow?", the last story before the Superman: Man of Steel Reboot:

"Heroes and villains alike fall. Long-forgotten characters return for a final bow: Jimmy Olsen and Lana Lang meet with valiant ends; Luthor, Bizarro and Mr. Mxyzptlk are dispatched; even Krypto the superdog gets the heroic death he deserves, nobly sacrificing himself in a scene that could stir the coldest comic-hating heart."

- Hilary Mantel to throw down with AS Byatt. Well not really. Here's the Booker longlist.

- But here's some actual literary throwdowns ie some of the greatest writer feuds. Kerouac going anti-semite on Ginsberg. Tolstoy and Dostoyevsky calling each other bitches. And: though it's been said they've made up, in 1976 Mario Vargas Llosa (right) punched Gabriel Garcia Marquez (left) in the face after a film screening, for reasons neither has acknowledged; the two didn't speak for 30 years.
