Attention all geeks! You can stop debating over which Batman villain should be cast in The Dark Knight Rises, for I bring you great news. Bane and Catwoman will appear in Christopher Nolan's final Batman film, played by Tom Hardy and Anne Hathaway respectively.
On paper, Hathaway will play Selena Kyle, who we all know is Catwoman in the comics. My guess is Nolan is doing another Harvey Dent thing and the majority of the movie will probably feature her out of costume (which could be a poor marketing decision if you think about it. I mean who doesn't want to see her in black spandex?)
I love these casting picks and the choice of villains. For one, this is a chance to redeem Bane after the horrible treatment he got in Batman & Robin. I've only seen Hardy in Inception, but he was pretty decent and can probably pull off the ferocity this character demands.
And Hathaway as Selena Kyle is perfect. She's one of the sexiest actresses in Hollywood and can actually act. Out of all the female characters they could cast, Kyle is ideal. She's actually got some layers to her, unlike 90 per cent of the lead women in comic book movies today. Michelle Pfeiffer set the bar fairly high, but I trust Nolan and Hathaway to do it right.
As an aside, I am slightly disappointed that Poison Ivy wasn't given her due. She's actually a pretty complex villain that deserves a proper adaptation. The comics do a so-so job, but check her out on Batman: The Animated Series, and read the AV Club's excellent review of her debut episode "Pretty Poison."
