Rejoice fellow nerds: the X-Men are here! Marvel has finally released the first two volumes of the classic 1990's X-Men cartoon on DVD. Volumes one and two contain episodes from the first three seasons, from the debut episode "Night Of The Sentinels," all the way up to the "Phoenix Saga."
The show adapted storylines from the X-Men comic just like Batman: The Animated Series did. After watching the first four episodes, however, it's become clear to me that the quality of the animation and writing hasn't aged well at all. It's still fun to watch out of nostalgia, and also to hear Gambit speaking with a cajun accent, saying things like "Life don't get much better 'den 'dis."
Fun fact: a lot of the voice actors are fellow Canucks like Alison Sealy-Smith (Storm) and Chris Potter (Gambit).
the phoenix saga ruined the x-men comic book, the tv series, and the 3rd movie... and yet, they still keep doing that garbage.
Batman TAS is clearly the best comic cartoon with it being watchable and comparable to anything today which speaks highly of the quality of that series. the only negative was that there wasnt a final episode until justice league unlimited's epilogue (which might be my favorite cartoon episode ever). anyway, xmen was awesome and part of my saturday morning routine before hockey. i loved when wolverine cut the top off of that pansy scott summer's car and then said "Tell Cyclops I made him a convertible." i also remember cheering mister sinister on against that pansy cyclops and jean grey. and lastly, my favorite memory was the morph storyline where wolverine was on the cliff looking down and speaking about his presumed dead friend, he said, "I'll avenge you my friend...I swear it" with him subsequently looking up and the claws coming out. heck, i even recently caught myself watching reruns on ytv during the early hours of the day.
