I've been following a show called Is It A Good Idea to Microwave This? on youtube. The show is produced by Jonathan Paula, and hosted by Jorey Caron and his side-kick Riley McIlwain. At the time of this post, these microwave experts conducted 195 experiments in their backyard (dorm room in earlier experiments), microwaving things such as electronics, vegetables, cleaning products, children toys, adult toys, novelty items and explosives. Their lofty safety measures include a thin peice of tin foil to shield harmful microwaves, several fans to diffuse toxic fumes, and goggles incase something explodes.
Out of all the episodes I've seen, I'd say their early experiments (1-100ish) are the most entertaining because they had no idea what they were doing and they had no idea what to expect. Consequently, they did little to protect themselves from disaster. Poor video quality gives it a raw home-made feel.
Here's what it's like to microwave an airbag:
Other good episodes include iPod, Catepillar Toy, Big Light Bulb, Egg. They also paid tribute to Will it Blend? by microwaving a blender.
Two future experiments I hope to see are a pepper spray and a mercury thermometer.
These guys deserve a prehumous Darwin award, so that they can microwave it.
