Mini Review - The Man From Earth (2007)

If nothing else Jerome Bixby's 2007 film The Man from Earth has one this going for it: strength of concept. It's premise is interesting; suppose a caveman existed that never died. He is not immortal - he can, supposedly, be killed - but he's never aged past his 30s.

This film asks the necessary questions. Could somebody who will live forever establish lasting relationships, could he love with the knowledge that he will outlive all of his loved ones? How could somebody who never ages avoid being stigmatized by society? How would he perceive time? And, would anybody believe him?

This movie possesses zero flash; the entire movie takes place within the titular Man's living room as he tries to convince his academic colleagues of his unique condition. One thing I enjoyed about this film is that it doesn't pull many punches. The portion covering religion, for example, is not for the sensitive.

However, there is an obvious problem present here: the acting ranges from mediocre to flat out bad. Not The Room awful by any stretch, but it's unfortunate that such an intelligent premise is mired by subpar talent.

Worth watching.
