The Dashing Fellows

So Now What?

After spending the better part of the last month devouring any type of Olympic coverage that I could get my hands on whether it was online, on the radio (which was surprisingly decent) or on television, I now find myself suffering from Olympic withdrawal.

I have been working the night shift this past week, sleeping while the sun is up and awake when very few people are which should have eased the transition but it has not.  Gone are the late night hockey games between Latvia and Belarus, the last curling match at 2am in the morning, video tributes of the crazy beer drinking Jon Montgomery.

In the post-Olympic era all that is left on late night television is Dr. Ho's muscle massage infomercial, which is funny because I was so swept up by the Olympics that I forgot before the Olympics Dr. Ho was also all that was on television at 3am.  Heck my withdrawal was so bad that it got to the point where I even missed Nikki Yanofsky singing "I believe."

In order to break myself out of my post-Vancouver 2010 funk I decided to devote myself to watching the new television show "Modern Family". (Side note: I will reaffirm what many people have said, that Modern Family might very well be the best comedy on network television. Sure any show with Bundy will grab my attention but there are so many other reasons to tune in… *cough Sofia Vergara and Julie Bowen. Lastly, it is amazing how much mileage television shows can get out of the idiot American dad schtick which might describe Ty Burrell's character on the show.)

It takes three hilarious episodes for me to be satisfactorily reintroduced to society right before I was caught up in the Olympic moment.  It now takes me an extra few seconds to actually remember what sport Ole Einar Bjoerndalen competes in (biathlon by the way).

I look down at my red mittens and wonder if I will even wear them ever again.  It is funny to think that my Team Canada Paul Kariya jersey really only has a shelf life of at most three weeks every four years.  Sure most of us have made the adjustment back to everyday life but it was kind of cool that for a few weeks, everybody was on the same page, rooting for the same team and 22 million Canadians had the privilege to see a once in a lifetime goal by Sidney Crosby that we will forever remember.  Who am I kidding?  I will be dusting off the Vancouver 2010 red mittens and trying to justify wearing the Paul Kariya jersey again in 2014.
