Worthwhile if it's New to You - The Ricky Gervais Show (HBO)

By Juan Miko de Villa Apr. 1, 2010 1:49 am

For some reason the premiere of The Ricky Gervais Show show on HBO slipped under my radar. I was really excited to get into it, but came away disappointed. Now, that's not a reflection on the quality of the show by any means, I'm merely let down by the fact that this "new" show is merely an animated version of Gervais and Stephan Merchant's podcast of the same name; aside from the the animation itself, there is no new content here.

I'm a huge fan of Gervais and Merchant and, really, my only problem with this show is that I've heard it all before; in fact, I still have all of their old podcasts. For anyone unfamiliar with the premise, Gervais and Merchant allow their oddball, round-headed chum Karl Pilkingon to wax poetic on various topics, interjecting frequently to mock him. Some of the things Pilkington says are so bizarre that you'll - rightly - question if it is an act, but from everything I've heard he's completely genuine.

If you have never heard the show before I think you'll really enjoy The Ricky Gervais Show on HBO, I just wish it was new to me too.
